STEM Student Chapters Criteria

Student Chapters at Marymount University (MU), Arlington, VA


Stranmillis University (SU), Belfast, NI

(IASL Student Chapter Criteria)

Certification Criteria:

  • Students must engage in leadership and community service.
  • Undergraduate students must be enrolled in 12 or more semester hours of undergraduate work at the stated university at the time of application.
  • Graduate students must be enrolled in 6 or more semester hours of graduate work at the stated university at the time of application.
  • Must have taken or be taking the following courses for certification at the institute: Mathematics or Numeracy, Science and Technology classes for graduate and undergraduate level. (MU students must take or will be taking ED 554, 558/358, 559/569)
  • Provide evidence of undertaking NASA webinar training in their chosen area of expertise. (estimated time 2 hours)
  • Must submit and receive credit for their portfolio as indicated below (SU students only).
  • Must attend a mandatory certification ceremony upon completion of all criteria as set above.
  • Must have evidence of all of the above in order for the issuance of a certificate, which will be valid for two years.

Leadership Events:

Participate in a Student Leadership Conference/STEM events held at their institution.

Criteria: Students lead, organize, recruit membership and implement STEM related activities on a given day under the guidance of a Faculty adviser. This event will be a showcase event for students from all programs. Total estimated time 5 hours.

Community Service:

(MU Only)

Facilitate and attend STEM events held at local schools. The estimated time for the events should be a minimum of 13 hours including travel.

(SU Only)

Students will facilitate a STEM event during school placement. All activities should be verified by a representative from the community work setting and the placement school. The community work setting and the placement school do not have to be the same.

Elaboration of the documentation required:

  • You need to submit a portfolio that contains the following information:
  • A record of your attendance and engagement at the educational setting in which you are delivering the STEM work. This record must be signed on each occasion by a member of the teaching staff in the school or educational setting in which you are working. At the end of your work the staff member within the community placement setting will be asked for a statement on the quality of your work.
  • Evidence of the additional on line training in which you have engaged.
  • All exemplar material that you have delivered during your sessions.
  • Photographic or video evidence of your work. Remember to obtain ethical permission for all photos and videos.
  • Evidence of the STEM event you have organized during your school placement.
  • Evidence of your engagement at the showcase Student Leadership Conference.
  • A media write up of your work either in the educational setting or in an event that you have run in college.


  • President - Responsible for leading the student chapter and its organization. Assumes all executive responsibilities of the student chapter or delegates duties and is the chief spokesperson for the student chapter.
  • Vice President - Assists and acts on behalf of the President of the student chapter. Responsible for recruiting membership to the student chapter
  • Historian - Documents events, meetings, and celebrations of student chapters through documentation of pictures
  • Secretary - Records minutes of the chapter and executive committee meetings. Assists the president in communicating with the faculty adviser
  • Treasurer - Prepares an academic year budget for approval by the executive committee

Dr. Irene Bell - SU

Dr Irene Bell
EdD MA(Ed) BSc(Hons) PGCE

Dr Irene Bell has been a member of the Stranmillis University College academic staff since 1996. She is Head of STEM and a Principal lecturer. She holds a BSc honours degree in Mathematics, a MA(Ed) degree and a PGCE from Queens University Belfast and an EdD from Exeter University. She has 11 years’ experience of teaching mathematics in Post-primary schools and 19 years of teaching within Initial Teacher Education. Formerly Head of Numeracy and Chair of Primary Education she now leads STEM Education at all levels within Stranmillis University College and is Chair of Post-primary Education. The author or co-author of several research papers and conference presentations she has been the recipient of a Teaching Award in both 2005 and 2007 and the joint winner of the 'Blackboard Technology Award' (2013). She is the Chair for Northern Ireland of Computing at Schools.
