Lt. Governor's Panel


We heard incredible commentary on the state of girls and women in STEM from Lt. Gov. Tim Griffin (AR), Lt. Gov. Kay Ivey (AL), Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno (NJ), and Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford (MD), all of which echoed the exemplary leadership of Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds (IA).

Immediately following the Lt. Governor's Panel, we released the 2016-2017 State of the States Report featuring 37 state teams. See what all of the states have accomplished, the programs they have gotten involved, and even where they are in completing their pledge goal.

Leading a State Effort

States Breakout Session 

During the first breakout session, we heard from a panel of state leaders about how they are leading their state efforts, moderated by Dr. Carole Cameron-Inge, MWM-VA State Chair. 

Beth Broome, MWM-CA - Beth went over how they have structured such a large state, with regional leadership, and an Honorary Leadership Council with distinguished individuals who can promote the effort across the state. 

Andrea Roberts, MWM-AR - Andrea went over her unique engagement strategy by partnering with Lt. Governor Tim Griffin for a roadshow to promote MWM across the state, all backed by Walmart. Walmart, Andrea's organization, helps to lead the state effort for AR as well, a different take on state structure. 

Jana Rieker, MWM-IA - Jana discussed the many ways IA is transitioning into a state effort focuses on results for mentoring as they are a more mature effort. She discussed initiative's like the Mayor's Project, the fellowship program they are developing, and the way they are using social media and their website to promote the effort.

From Pledges to Completed

States Breakout Session 

During the second breakout session, we heard strategies for completing their pledge goals from a panel of state leaders, moderated by Kim Case, MWM-NJ State Chair. 

Venita Sivamani, MWM-CA Venita shared her experience with the mentoring pilot program they launched this year using MentorCloud, an online mentoring platform, and UC Davis Students. 

Joleen Clark, MWM-FL - Joleen discussed the work they have done with Hillsborough County Public Schools, where interested schools received a STEM mentor to meet with 5-7 girls weekly during the school year. This program mentored over 350 girls and is being expanded to new cities in Florida. 

Jenny Kopach, MWM-IL - Jenny, who also represents Science Olympiad - a National MWM Partner, explained how Science Olympiad has been instrumental in completing the pledge for IL and how other states, companies, and organizations can use the structure of Science Olympiad for mentoring.

Outstanding State Achievement Award 

Gala Awards Ceremony

The MWM-TN team was this year's winner of the Outstanding State Achievement Award, which was selected by overwhelming by votes from other states leaders. Their accomplishments included engaging several companies and higher education institutions across the state, launching regionally with leadership in Middle Tennessee, being the first state team to host a fundraising event to raise money for the state effort by partnering with the local Girl Scouts council, and even surpassing their original 10,000 pledge goal by recording 17,000 mentoring relationships through the Be Counted! Campaign.
